    The effect of initial texture on multiple necking formation in polycrystalline thin rings subjected to dynamic expansion

    In this paper, we have investigated, using finite element calculations, the effect of initial texture on the formation of multiple necking patterns in ductile metallic rings subjected to rapid radial expansion. The mechanical behavior of the material has been modeled with the elasto-viscoplastic single crystal constitutive model developed by Marin (2006). The polycrystalline microstructure of the ring has been generated using random Voronoi seeds. Both 5000 grain and 15000 grain aggregates have been investigated, and for each polycrystalline aggregate three different spatial distributions of grains have been considered. The calculations have been performed within a wide range of strain rates varying from to , and the rings have been modeled with four different initial textures: isotropic texture, Goss texture, R Goss texture and Z fiber texture. The finite element results show that: (i) the spatial distribution of grains affects the location of the necks, (ii) the decrease of the grain size delays the formation of the necking pattern and increases the number of necks, (iii) the initial texture affects the number of necks, the location of the necks, and the necking time, (iv) the development of the necks is accompanied by a local increase of the slip activity. This work provides new insights into the effect of crystallographic microstructure on dynamic plastic localization and guidelines to tailor the initial texture in order to delay dynamic necking formation and, thus, to improve the energy absorption capacity of ductile metallic materials at high strain rates.This work has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Programme (Excellent Science, Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Actions) under REA grant agreement 777896 (Project QUANTIFY). We alter the balance of these systems in a number of computational simulations using three types of agent equipped with a novel, hybrid, human-like cognitive architecture. These agents are situated in the stochastic, multi-agent Tileworld domain, whose complexity can be precisely controlled and widely varied. We explore how agent performance is affected by different balances of problem-solving and pattern-recognition, and conduct a sensitivity analysis upon key pattern-recognition system variables. Results indicate that pattern-recognition improves agent performance by as much as 36.5 % and, if a balance is struck with particular pattern-recognition components to promote pattern-recognition use, performance can be further improved by up to 3.6 %.     Organic residues from agricultural and forest companies in Brazil as useful substrates for cultivation of the edible mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus

    We investigated whether highly available organic residues in Brazil can be used as substrates for the production of the oyster mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus, instead of the conventional cultivation using the eucalyptus sawdust substrate. We assessed the mushroom yield on 13 substrates, of which 12 were formulated with different concentrations of organic residues and one with pure eucalyptus sawdust, and verified whether the raw material used in the substrate formula and the concentration of such alternative residues influenced their biological efficiencies. Substrates containing eucalyptus bark resulted in higher mushroom yield than those containing eucalyptus sawdust, which generally resulted in similar mushroom yield to the remaining formulas. Moreover, the raw material and the concentration of each residue affected the biological efficiency of the substrates. We show that the conventional substrate for P. ostreatus can be replaced by substrates easily accessible to producers without loss in productivity. Furthermore, that the concentration of these mixtures affects the mushroom productivity and should be considered when formulating the growth medium.Peer reviewe

    Position estimating in peer-to-peer networks

    We present two algorithms for indoor positioning estimation in peer-to-peer networks. The setup is a network of two types of devices: reference devices with a known location and blindfolded devices that can determine distances to reference devices and each other. From this information the blindfolded devices try to estimate their positions. A typical scenario is navigation inside a shopping mall where devices in the parking lot can make contact with GPS satellites, whereas devices inside the building make contact with each other, devices on the parking lot, and devices fixed to the building. The devices can measure their in-between distances, with some measurement error, and exchange positioning information. However, other devices might only know their position with some error. We present two algorithms for positioning estimation in such a peer-to-peer network. The first one is purely geometric and is based on Euclidean geometry and intersecting spheres. We rewrite the information to a linear system, which is typically overdetermined. We use least squares to ??nd the best estimate for a device its position. The second approach can be considered as a probabilistic version of the geometric approach. We estimate the probability density function that a device is located at a position given a probability density function for the positions of the other devices in the network, and a probability density function of the measured distances. First we study the case with a distance measurement to a single other user, then we focus on multiple other users. We give an approximation algorithm that is the probabilistic analogue of the intersecting spheres method. We show some simulated results where ambiguous data lead to well defined probability distributions for the position of a device. We conclude with some open questions

    Measurement of the electric dipole moments for transitions to rubidium Rydberg states via Autler-Townes splitting

    We present the direct measurements of electric-dipole moments for 5P3/2nD5/25P_{3/2}\to nD_{5/2} transitions with 20<n<4820<n<48 for Rubidium atoms. The measurements were performed in an ultracold sample via observation of the Autler-Townes splitting in a three-level ladder scheme, commonly used for 2-photon excitation of Rydberg states. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic measurement of the electric dipole moments for transitions from low excited states of rubidium to Rydberg states. Due to its simplicity and versatility, this method can be easily extended to other transitions and other atomic species with little constraints.     Resonant Auger spectroscopy at the L2,3 shake-up thresholds as a probe of electron correlation effects in nickel

    The excitation energy dependence of the three-hole satellites in the L3-M4,5M4,5 and L2-M4,5M4,5 Auger spectra of nickel metal has been measured using synchrotron radiation. The satellite behavior in the non-radiative emission spectra at the L3 and L2 thresholds is compared and the influence of the Coster-Kronig channel explored. The three-hole satellite intensity at the L3 Auger emission line reveals a peak structure at 5 eV above the L3 threshold attributed to resonant processes at the 2p53d9 shake-up threshold.     Non-equilibrium emission of complex fragments from p+Au collisions at 2.5 GeV proton beam energy

    Energy and angular dependence of double differential cross sections d2σ^2\sigma/dΩ\OmegadE was measured for reactions induced by 2.5 GeV protons on Au target with isotopic identification of light products (H, He, Li, Be, and B) and with elemental identification of heavier intermediate mass fragments (C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, and Al). It was found that two different reaction mechanisms give comparable contributions to the cross sections. The intranuclear cascade of nucleon-nucleon collisions followed by evaporation from an equilibrated residuum describes low energy part of the energy distributions whereas another reaction mechanism is responsible for high energy part of the spectra of composite particles. Phenomenological model description of the differential cross sections by isotropic emission from two moving sources led to a very good description of all measured data. Values of the extracted parameters of the emitting sources are compatible with the hypothesis claiming that the high energy particles emerge from pre-equilibrium processes consisting in a breakup of the target into three groups of nucleons; small, fast and hot fireball of \sim 8 nucleons, and two larger, excited prefragments, which emits the light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments. The smaller of them contains \sim 20 nucleons and moves with velocity larger than the CM velocity of the proton projectile and the target. The heavier prefragment behaves similarly as the heavy residuum of the intranuclear cascade of nucleon-nucleon collisions. %The mass and charge dependence of the total production cross %sections was extracted from the above analysis for all observed %reaction products.
